His best-known works include the novel Tarry Flynn, and the poems "On Raglan Road" and "The Great Hunger". He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace.

Tarry Flynn examines the great hungers of a society with a stifled need not only to be loved, but also to love. It centres on an indictment of the Church’s complicity in the repression of individuals’ spirit and its characters’ schemes to gain advantages. Is there a man that cares That I might be spared Such a life of drudgery Of digging clay Tossing cocks of hay Wishing all the day That somehow I could be free Chorus: O you are a rascal, Tarry Flynn You're writing poetry instead of digging drills Strolling around.

There's a sense of authenticity in the portrait of a rural Irish community, so accurately conveyed in character and mood and tempo that one almost sees- with Tarry Flynn- the ""dry brown headland of the potato field""- ""the crossroads of a Sunday evening"" his mother alone making pancakes for him, things, as his uncle tells him, that he'll love yet more at miles distant.

It’s a modern classic, with a mastery of style that never fails to astonish. Kavanagh swings with apparent ease from hilarious to profound within the same paragraph; the sublime to the ridiculous sitting sentences apart.

But I think what I really love about it is the way that it explores.
